About Monika Kindergarten and Elementary School

Welcome to Monika Kindergarten & Elementary School, where every child's journey begins with boundless potential. Located at 20 Imek Road, Ikot Ekpene, we’ve been dedicated to nurturing young minds since 1981. Our motto, 'Creativity and Self-reliance!', isn’t just a phrase—it's the heart of our mission. We believe in providing a loving, supportive environment where children feel safe to explore, grow, and build the independence they need to thrive. At Monika, we don’t just teach children we prepare young minds for life.

At Monika Kindergarten and Elementary School, our vision is to create a nurturing and inspiring environment where every child feels safe, happy, and excited to learn. We believe that childhood is the most important stage of life and a time to build confidence, explore curiosity, and develop kindness. That’s why we focus on more than just academics. We help each child discover their unique voice, grow their imagination, and develop the skills they’ll need to succeed in school and in life. Our goal is to send every child forward with a strong foundation not just in reading and numbers, but in character, creativity, and courage. We envision a future where every Monika child leaves our school ready to shine not just as a student, but as a confident and compassionate human being.

Our History

Our story began with a beautiful partnership. In 1981, Mrs. Monika Essien, a passionate German educationist, and her Nigerian husband, Mr. Anthony Paul Essien, founded our school at 40 Old Itu Road, Ikot Ekpene. Starting with just 24 pupils and 5 staff members, our commitment to quality education quickly led to growth.

By 1984, we built our first three-classroom block at our permanent home on 20 Imek Road. The government granted approval for our Primary section in 1986, and in 1987, our first class of 17 candidates successfully sat for the First School Leaving Certificate examination.

As our family grew, so did our campus. With co-sponsorship from the German government, we completed a new two-storey classroom block in 2002. Today, we are proud to be a vibrant community of over 1000 pupils, all benefiting from the strong foundation built over four decades ago.
